Reliability of functional forms for calculation of longitudinal dispersion coefficient in rivers

چکیده

Although dimensional analysis suggests sound functional forms (FFs) to calculate longitudinal dispersion coefficient (Kx), no attempt has been made quantify both reliability of the estimated Kx value and its sensitivity variation FFs' parameters. This paper introduces a new index named bandwidths similarity factor (bws–factor) FFs based on rigorous distinct calibration datasets tune FFs. We modified bootstrap approach ensure that each resampled dataset is representative available datapoints in rich, global database tracer studies. The dimensionless values were calculated by 200 tuned with generalized reduced gradient algorithm. Correlation coefficients for varied from 0.60 0.98. bws–factor ranged 0.11 1.00, indicating poor calculation, mainly due different sources error calculation process. exponent river's aspect ratio over wider range (i.e., ?0.76 1.50) compared computed friction term ?0.56 0.87). Since used combination one-dimensional numerical models water quality studies, estimation can result unrealistic concentrations being simulated downstream pollutant release into rivers.

GNMM and accurate longitudinal dispersion coefficient prediction

Longitudinal dispersion coefficient is a key variable for the description of the longitudinal transport in a river. In recent years, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have become popular and useful tools for environmental modellers as they are perceived to overcome some of the difficulties associated with traditional statistical approaches. In these applications, however, little attention was g...

Estimating longitudinal dispersion in rivers using Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers

a r t i c l e i n f o The longitudinal dispersion coefficient (D) is an important parameter needed to describe the transport of solutes in rivers and streams. The dispersion coefficient is generally estimated from tracer studies but the method can be expensive and time consuming, especially for large rivers. A number of empirical relations are available to estimate the dispersion coefficient; h...

Pool Effects on Longitudinal Dispersion in Streams and Rivers

Surface storage (pools, pockets, and stagnant areas caused by woody debris, bars etc) is very important to solute transport in streams as it attenuates the peak of a spill but releases the solute back to the stream over a long time. The latter results in long exposure time of biota. Pools as fundamental stream morphology unit are commonly found in streams with mixed bed materials in pool-riffle...
